Flames winning streak stopped UNOFFICIALLY the North Shore Winter Club Flames’ win streak was harpooned at 17 consecutive games when they were handed a 9-5 loss by the White Rock Whalers in West Coast Junior Hockey League action Dec. 11. Whether or not the loss becomes official, or will result in a replay of the game, is contingent upon the outcome of a protest lodged by league governor Ray Stonehouse following the Dec. 11 game in White Rock. The basis of the protest is the game referee’s failure to enforce an unequivocal ruling of the British Columbia Amateur Hockey Association, applicable to Junior B players, calling for a two-minute minor penalty to any player not wearing a CSA-approved mouth guard and facial protector during a game. The protest arose late in the se- cond period when, with the score tied at 5-5 and both teams playing shorthanded, the Flames were assessed a second penalty. To offset the Whalers’ man ad- vantage situation, Flames’ coach Jotn Bartok drew the referee’s at- tention to a White Rock player not wearing a mouthguard. No penalty was assessed by the referee and the Whalers scored on the man advantage taking a Sead Ny they would never relinquish. To recap Friday's game, after taking a 1-0 lead early in the first period, the Flames found themselves trailing 3-2 after one period, but had battled back from 4-2 and 5-3 deficits and then tied the score 5-5 before the Whalers went ahead 6-5 on the protested power play goal. The Whalers added three unanswered goals in the third period, including a goal scored on a controversial penalty shot call midway through the stanza. Flame scorers were Kevin Buhr and Dave Port with a pair each and Andrew Merilees with a single. Ken Savage and Scott Stirling led the way with assists, each col- lecting two. At home Dec. 12, there was no doubt about the outcome as the Flames rebounded from the previous game witha 10-0 rout of the Grandview Steelers, backed by shutout goaltending from Mike 95 52499: 310.00 Minolta DL Quartz Date a Bhack’s exclusive: Wide angle or normal fens at touch of a button.
