B4 - Sunday, July 15, 1984 - North Shore News EEE auto <7 By JOHN WALBY WHAT IS [T about someone bent dolefully over a flat tire on the side of the road that makes them look as though they’re posing for a Norman Rockwell painting? — as though they’re ruefully savoring one of ‘‘life’s little moments?’’ — as though they’ve been cast as the good- natured dupe for one of Fate’s little jokes? Nothing, that’s what! IT’S NOT FUNNY I can’t think of one person who sees anything even remotely aesthetic or funny about having to change a flat tire — not one. In fact, most of us would do just about anything to get out of it. Some flats can be prevented by keeping a wat- chful eye on tread wear, mak- ing sure it isn’t uneven or ex- cessive; and by ensuring the tires are properly inflated. Your owner’s manual or sticker on the door will give the correct pressure for your own tires. You should check the pressure at least once a month. But, even if you're careful, you can’t always avoid tire puncturing road hazards Worn tires tend to pick up debris such as nails, glass and screws much more readily than new tires That's why it's important that your spare tire 1s properly inflated and that your jack tis in working order and stowed where it's supposed to be; ready for that fateful day when you'll need them. Remember to keep a pair of gloves handy tn your trunk - changing tres can be dirty work Sometimes tires go flat in the dead of night, the hte hissing slowly out) of them until morning Others nature with a perverse let us down as we drive unawares along. the road. If that happens to you, don’t hit the brakes, take your foot off the accelerator and steer to the curb or shoulder of the road. If the shoulder is soft or falls away from the roadway, you have, in a sense, cheated Fate because it would be unsafe to use your jack, since it could easily shift, sending your car thumping to the ground. Rather than change the tire: yourself, call a tow truck. If you arent’ sure of the jack, you should call so- se@one for help in any case. But, if the shoulder is firm and level, you might just as well get on with it. Before getting out of the car, put your hazard lights on, set your parking brake and put your car in ‘‘Park’’, unless your car’s a standard, in which case, leave it in gear. Once outside the car, keep an eye and an ear cocked for oncoming traffic. Flares or emergency reflectors help other drivers to see you. Be visible. Remove your spare tire, yack and ure iron from the trunk and assemble them beside the flat. Pry off the hub cap and use 1t to hold the wheel nuts you'll soon be removing Remember to follow the procedure in your owner's manual GET IT FIXED As soon as possible, have your service stauion attendant check the ture pressure on the replacement tire and wheel nut pressure This is a good time to have your flat repaired of replaced Some newer cars are equipped with space saving spares that arent’ meant to be driven for extended penods of time Besides, you never know when the fickle tinger of Bate will point at you again Old autos highlight show “IN GEAR”: Cars and Clothes 1905 - 1985 is an ex- hibition sure to please all ages.
