Frazier Henry views the film as a way of
“preserving old things, and of archiving
Simon’s story. Otherwise, he might die and
never get to have the creative participation.

“new ways of making the old legends and
stories relevant to a modern generation.
People tire of Indians always being portrayed
in the past — like Hiawatha or Pocahontas. I

Central to Frazier Henry's work is the
invelvement of young native actors and crew.
Many of the cast of Legends had never acted
before — and several of the production team
were brought on board as part of the
National Film Board’s Aboriginal Training
Program.

Frazier Henry expresses some apprehen-
sion about native stories being “ghettoized,”
particularly with the introduction of a new
aboriginal television station in Manitoba

“which is great,” she says, “as long as the
major networks don" t just say, ‘Go to your
own TV station.’” Nonctheless, she says
there is now “a really good representation of
native voices” on mainstream Canadian tele-
vision, with programs like North of 60 and
First Story focusing on contemporary issues

and lifestyles.

agrees. “Opportunities are definitely picking
up in the media,” he says. “As a native actor
you want to do lots of different things and
Not get typecast — now they're casting real
natives, not a white guy with a wig.”

House says that Legends is “a really great
story, A lot of aboriginals don’t even know
about their own traditions. Even the lan-
guage is rarely spoken in the city. (The film)
gives kids a chance to see that it’s OK to
stick with tradition and Jearn about their cul-
ture rituals. Itt! look really good, and people
will have a whole new understanding about
Siwash Rock. They jog by, ride by everyday
without giving it much thought.”

Legends — The Storv of Siwash Rock will
be broadeast in the fali on CTV.

WV choir takes top
prize at USA festival

ROCKRIDGE’S Treble Choir has
mined gold south of the border.

The West Vancouver school choir picked
up top prize at a music festival in Saratoga,
California, April 14-18.

Students in grades 10 through12 at West
Vancouver Secondary and Rockridge schools
comprise the choir, which performs under the
leadership of Peter Vanderhorst.

The choir won the gold medal in the
women's choirs division, was named the best
choir at the festival, and received the adjudi-
cators” special award for earning the highest
aggregate score, 97.3%. Along with these
honours came an invitation to participate in
the National Invitativnal Choral Festival at
the John F. Kennedy Centre for the
Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
