THERE is little more personal about a wedding
than the choice of jewelry — from the engage-
ment ring to what the bridesmaids will wear on
the big day.
And although gold and diamonds are still a favourite, they
are no longer the only options for wedding day adornment.
“A lot of people are getting away from spending two months
salary on an engagement ring,” said Joanne Hart, one of the
designers for Vancouver-based jewelry design studio Luxe
Design. “Especially younger couples are looking for something
more interesting and affordable.”

Most of the pieces which Hart and her partner West Van res-

ident Andrea Mueller design, are simple silver pendants, ear-
rings and rings, to complement everyday wear.
“When we design an engagement ring we can upgrade from
ly inexpensive stones to diamonds or whatever the bride
wishes. Sometimes people bring in stones or gold from their
grandmothers’ jewelry to be reworked.”

Mueller designed one engagement ring in silver and peri-
dots, which are clear, paie green stones.

if you are looking for a more traditional ring however, the
news frara the Diamond Information Centre, based in Toronto,
is that Canadians are choosing rings in platinum and mixed
metals. a:.cy-shaped diamonds, such as marquise, pear and
Princess “h2 -:s, are a growing trend; as are lower-set diamonds
-~- many «nen find them more wearable for their active
lifestyle.

And of course, among women who do choose a diamond
engagement ring, the solitaire never goes out of style. In 1995,
41% of ail diamond engagement rings sold featured a classic sin-
gle stone sctting.

Jewelry also adds an important touch of personal taste on the
wedding day. Luxe Design’s “vine necklace,” a graceful owist of
tiny silver leaves, sits perfectly with a simple wedding gown.

Mueller and Hart have also designed jewelry as gifts from a
bride to her bridesmaids. The pieces not only look beautiful on
the wedding day, but will serve as a lasting reminder of their
roles in the special event.

“It's a fairly simple process,” said Hart. “We have designs we
can show them and from there
we can accommodate their
ideas, One bride chose a “bub-

for cach of five bridesmaids.
