MAIL Box Free speech and other B.C. labour laughs Dear Editor: No one should ever claim that there aren’t lots of knee-slappers in the papers. I read in the Vancouwr Sun, tor instance, that the B.C. Federation of Labour has given $10,000 to a campaign on behalf of rampaging students who fought the police at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference fast year. The students are not being prosecut- ed, of course. They want to prosecute. Now for the laugh: Federation presi- dent Ken Georgetti believes the students” free specch rights were violated. Free speech, he said. is “traditionally impor- tant to che Isbour movement,” the labour movement having had a history of cham- pioning free speech. Well, blow me down for a simpleton. But how many dollars have floated in trom that source to the North Shore News Free Speech Defence Fund. And what support has he given it? It must be a matter of whose speech is involved. Free speech for me but not for thee! THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER If Mr. Georgetti is so keen on free speech, how come he hasn't had a word to say against B.C's speech-denying Human Rights Code, enacted by his cronies in Victoria and the biggest threat to a free press in over half a century? But here I go again. For him to do that would be like expecting the Roman emperor Caligula. to be against throwing Christians to the lions. It’s a funny old world.
