West Vancouver resident Jody Simmons, the spokesperson for the group, said the 2,000 kilometre jour- ney has been a huge success for the women. “I's a wild feeling to be after four years of planning amazing feeling,” Simmons said. The crew arrived at Ambleside Beach to a hero’s welcome on Sept. 5. “The North Shore fire boat put on a beautiful display for us,” she said. “It was a wonderful fecling to be home.” Joining Simmons on the journcy were Alice Webcr, Kristin Maddox, Buffy Lundine, and Robyn Irvine. Ranging in age from: 22 to 26, Simmons added the most difficuh obstacle tor the team to overcome was their group consensus method of deci- sion raking. “We didn’t have a team leader, we EL NINA kayakers (left to right) Buffy Lundine, Robyn Irvine, Alice Weber, Kristin Maddox and West Van’ 's Jody Simmons. wanted to go with a group consensus on all decisions,” she recalled. “It was the right choice for us, but at times the process was fengthy.” Documentation of the trip will be used to promote the Leave No Trace wilderness philosophy to outdoor insti- tutions, schools, and libraries across Canada and the United States. The next step for Simmons is to present a slide show of the expedition at schools acress Canada. “We'd like to be able to visit every capital city from Vancouver to Teronte,” Simmons continued. “We've only solidly booked our first date in Nelson on October 5 at the Capital Theatre. We're hoping we can drum up sponsorship to bring the slide show across Canada, down into the United States and back up into B.C. again.” Prior to leaving, the Nelson-based crew sought corporate sponsors to help offset the costs of the wip. “There wert over 30 sponsors who helped us out,” she said. “Everything from the equipment we used to the clothing, we wore was all provided for us ... we're so grateful to everyone who helped us our.” For now, the team of kayaking adventurers are taking a well deserved rest for the month of September. “I really want to go on the road with the slide show and promote the expedition from a base level,” Simmons remarked, “We really want to nyake people aware of what's out there.” say “Fe or ‘Tickets ry TUNE-UP Replace plugs, air filter, PCV valve, check fuel filter re OIL, LUBE & FILTER Replace filter & oil, lube all hinges & iocks [¥v FOUR WHEEL BRAKE CHECK Calipers. hoses, wheel cy/’s, pads, shoes, rotors, drums & master cyl. kG SUSPENSION Gheck shock absorbers, springs, sieering linkages {Y ELECTRICAL Check lights, wipers, washers, & ham Please present coupon at time of purchase.
