10 — Friday. May 29, 1998 -- North Shore News Sterling diabetes story Dear Editor: May | compliment Judy Smith on the article she wrote on Dr. John Hunt (News Friday, May 22). I really found it to be so “just right” tor him, It deseri his diabetes career perfectly, | may add that he was happy with it as well. Being that he is a very modest man, I often wondered how | could tell more peoole just how w ‘onderful he is, not just with diabetes, but other problems of the endocrine and even com- mon-sense health problems. He truly was given a gift for medi- cine. Tristan Warwick called me the moment he had hung up from the interview. He was thrilled that he was the one chosen ter be interviewed. | know Judy must have enjoyed her conver- sition with him as well. Ir’s hard to believe that he is only 10 years old. The photograph of Dr. Hunt was the best I have seen for many years. Thanks to Mike Wakefield. Again thank you Judy, many thanks for a wonderful article, smashing picture and more awareness of diabetes for the public. Carol Karlsson North Vancouver Firemen out of shape Dear Editor: Why are firemen allowed to become so out of shape? I know it is very difficult for young people to get into the fire department due to stringent physical requirements which, once in, scem to be forgotten as each one tries to out do the other in the kitchen of the fire hall. The four retiring members in your recent Wednesday edition look like heart attacks waiting to happen. Hopefully, they get out of the kitchen and inte the tec centre before that happens. As a pioneer in the nghts of women, Murphy's contribution to the evolution of human rights in our country was very significant. Bur as a sp swe have been evoiving. Not long ago spousal assault was called “keeping vour wife obedient,” a defined in the marriage agreement. Twenty-five vears ago it was considered acceptable for an ctant husband to be drinking at a focal bar with his bud- after dropping his wife off at the hospital. In fact, at that time, Dad would have had a difficult time finding a doctor who would even allow him to be present at the birth of his child. Now it $s expected that Dad will partic- ipate, and I dare say it’s had an incredible impact on tathers everywhere. Thankfully, we continue to evolve. We can now appreciate that some ef the views held by Emily Murphy were in fact quite reprehensible by our stan- dards. This does not negate her contribution or the value in her work. But when it comes to issues like racism, we must have the courage to take a stand. Racism is not “politically incorrect.” It is morally and spir- itually incorrect. As the executive director of a non-profit seci- ety for over 20 years, 1 know whar it’s Hike to work with a board of dedicated volunteers. These people give so much for so little recognition and appreciation. In the last few vears these volunteers and the charitable organizations they rep t have been cheated and threatened with closure by politicians who claim to know whar’s best for us. Under these difficult circumstances, the North Shore Crisis Services Society had the courage to actual: : up to its well- chosen new name: Sage. As defined in Web age, means “wise through reflection and experience, characterized by wis- dom, prudence and good judgment.” Bravo Sage!
