A rule of thumb most
parents use is if a child
can get into trouble, he
or she will.

And while this often imsplies
nothing, more serious than a
scraped knee or a bruised arm,
some mishaps can be deadly.

and Gary Bleasdale of Kiddie

“More children die in

North America each year from -

accidents than all diseases com-
bined,” said Gary.

That frightening statistic
was partially responsible for the
couple getting into the busi-
ness of helping parents make
their homes safer tor their chil-
dren. Although Kiddie
Proofers is a national company,
this is its first incarnation in the
Lower Mainland.

“We discovered them
about a year ago at a franchise
show,” said Gary. “It’s some-
thing we've always been inter-
ested in and it kind of struck a
chord with us,” added the
father of three.

Bleasdales set an appointment
to inspect a customer’s home.
“We walk through the
home with our client and we
alert them to all their prob-
lems,” said Lynda. “A lot of
times we'll mention things that
we don’t even have products
for,” added Gary, stressing the
visits aren’t centred around scll-
ing, but instead focus on safety.
The second part of the ser-
vice focuses on solutions. These
are as varied as they are innova-
tive. Everything ftom a hearth
guard which is nothing more

than a padded strip that fits
snugly alo long its outer edges to
cupboard locks.

The cupboard locks rely on
a magnet which acts as a key.
Without the magnet “key,” the
cupboards remain locked.

“We had one family which
was a little hesitant about using
a magnet to open their cup-
boards, but within a few days
they were recommending it to
others,” said Gary.

OF course not all problem
areas. the Bleasdales discover
have a ready-made solution.

“Sometimes we make cus-

tom solutions.”
