culture of hair.” Subtitled “A
Journey Into the Transformation of
Self" this illustrated hardcover
puts hair into a sociologica! con-
text.

McCracken, an anthropologist
and former Vancourerite, has taken
an academic yet entertaining
approach to this study of hair. He
probes the myths. Do blondes real-
ly have more fun? Do redheads
always spell trouble? Is brown hair
the color of the meek, the timid
and the mild?

And he gives weight to a heady
pursuit. In his preface. McCracken
writes “despite the fact that hair is
one of the great preoccupations of
contemporary life, that we North
Americans spend $16 billion a year
