COULD A merger of West Vancouver School District 45 and North Vancouver School District 44 be in the cards in the light of statements by the provincial Liberal and Reform parties in recent months? WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD By Glen Anwick Both opposition parties favor merging school and other municipal bodies should they form the gov- emment in the next B.C. election. Sunday, May 21, 1995 —- North Shore News — 23 ~- Merger movement mul The possibility of a North Shore amalgamation of school districts seems remote. West Vancouver School Board chairman Ken | Haycock said Tuesday that District 45 officials had recently met with their District - 44 counterparts in order to discuss cooperation with financial purchas- es as a way of saving money. He. said, however, there . appeared to be little in the area of savings in which the two districts could work together on. Trustee Clive Bird explained that West Vancouver, with its 6,000 ° pupils, ranks 25th in size out of 75 B.C. school districts. oo Bird said the West Vanceuver school district is “a justifiable stand-alone school board.” He added there were few: cost advantages: for a merger. of West Vancouver . District with North Vancouver. ; He. ‘said numerous districts across the province which only have 2,000 students or iess would be looked at first for amalgamation. Trustee Jean Ferguson, who will be representing public school employers in upcoming collective bargaining sessions: with | the province's teachers, admitted a dis- banded committee set up to look into district mergers could well be reinstated by a new provincial gov- ernment.
