DURING THE fast four
years the construction of new
single family houses in
Greater Vancouver has
declined while the number of
new apartment units and
townhouses has nearly dou-
bled,

In 1994 only West
Vancouver and White Rock
issued more permits for new
single family houses than for
the combined total for apart-
ment units and townhouses.

In 1991, Surrey, Rich-
mond, Delta, Coquidam, Port

Coquitlam, Port Moody,
Maple Ridge, and Langley
Township all issued more
permits for houses than for
apartment units/townhouses.
The statistics, monitored
by the Greater Vancouver
Regional District's Strategic
Planning Department, are
clear evidence that higher
residential densities — are
uccurring across the region.
The shift is in line with the
Livable Region Strategic
Plan, which contains mea-
sures to prevent urban spraw!

and preserve agricuftural land
and green spices,

The development industry
is responding to the new
regional planning policies.
The plan calls tor higher den-
sities, und for a larger share
of townhouses in the mix of
new housing starts,

In (994, there were 6,345
single family houses built in
the metre area compared to
6,991 in L991. The total for
apartment units and town-
houses was 14,128 in 1994
compared to 7,778 in 1991,
