OK, SO Ted White, MP, and
our own Doug Collins don’t
want to see taxpayers bur-
dened with $33,000 to assist
in the building of the
Women’s Monument in
Thornton Park.

Yes, Ted and Doug, it's certain-
ly a gigantic sum of moncy, and is
certainly one of the more prominent
examples of screwy, out-of-control
government spending. As you've
pointed out at the bottom of your
Women’s Monument form letter,
Ted, the federal debt as of Aug. 30,
1994, was $528,504,430,470.00.

Well, all I can say is that I'm
glad that we have you and Doug to
get things in perspective for us and
smoke out the real contributors to
that debt — in this case, those radi-
cal feminists.

In fact, having read all your
arguments against a monument to
women whe have suffered male
violence, I'm now beginning to
have iny doubts about the allocation
of $33,000 for the monument as
well.

It occurs to me that maybe the
money should be spent on Adult
Basic Education for our two protec-
tors of the public purse.

Let's review someé of the com-~
ments.

White has been quoted as saying
that a monument honoring women
murdered by men is another case of
a special-interest group hijacking
the public purse for “a tasteless
cause.”

The always-colorful Collins
waxed eloquent with this lite
thought: “Radical /‘2ms are always
hot on ‘sexual discrimination’ in
the universities and anywhere els¢
they can show their claws. So why

As for radical fems, let mie tell
you something about a lot of those
radical fems, Doug, and not-so-rad-
ical fems. They are women who are
fed up with being treated like
punching bags or seeing other
women treated like punching bags.
They are women who dare to speak
up in a voice as loud as yours,
Doug, about what's wrong in this
society.

This problem belongs to most of
us and touches most oF us during
our lives.

It affects thousands of children,
many of whom will continue the
cycle of violence and putin as adults
because that's all they've learned
about family relations.

Just consider these numbers
from surveys by Statistics Canada
and the Standing Committee on
Health and Welfare:

2.5 million Canadian women
have experienced violence at the
hands of a partner; 219% of these
women were beuten or attacked by
a partner during pregnancy.

@ More than half of the women in
Canada (51%) have been physically
or sexually assaulted after the age
of 16.

One in six currently married
women reported violence by their
spouses; one-half of women with
previous marriages reported vio-
lence by a previous spouse.

If Ted and Doug don’t think
they need all the education and
public statements they can get
about violence against women, they
should think for one second about
O.J. Simpson -—- an abuser, possi-.
bly a murderer, who has received
literally thousands of fan letters,

Nicole Simpson is not a once-in-
a-decade aberration. The only rea-
son her case is gracing the front
page of The National Enquirer
every week is that “The Juice” was
an American hero.

What the late and abused Mrs.
Simpsnn proved so tragically is
that, no matter how beautiful and

desirable you are as a woman, if
you're living with a Gime bomb who
can’ timanige his anger, you're in
deup trouble.

Ted, Doug and others are upset
because The Women's Monument
coordinators refuse to delete “mur-
dered by men” in the inscription
and replace it with wording that
would make the project, Ted sug-
gests, “less provocative.”

What are we trying to say here,
Ted? There aren’1 enough mature,
thinking men out there te accept an
artistic Monument to the pain men

have inflicted on women?

There isn’t enough male brain-
power to realize chat the monument
isn’t a personal attack on them, but
rather an invitation (through the
inscription) for men and women to
continue to work against violence.

In his monument form letter,
Ted warns that the anti-monument
feeling could lead to an attack on
the monument: “Some people have
called the office to say that they
will spray it with graffiti.”

Sort of points to a problem in
this society, doesn’t it Ted?
