Vanya Gerath realized her dream in) mid-January while attending classes at the Paris Fashion Institute. An Argyle grad, Gerath enrolled in’ the four-week program afier com- pleting fashion studies at Blanche Macdonald last June. Since classes fell, during couture week, the Paris school held a lottery for tickets to the shows, A handful of lucky students nabbed highly coveted passes to Yves Saint Laurent’s show, only to find once they arrived that they were relegated to a side room to watch the show on live video, says Gerath, who won tickets to nine shows. Shows she attended ranged from the high-profile (Paco Rabanne, Louis Feraud and Ungaro) to the obscure (Dominique Sirop and Valentin Yudashkin). As a result of this campaign we were able to present a cheque in the amount of $320.00 to this very worthwhile charity. The experience gave Gerath a snapshot of fashion at its best, and worst, like gain- ing a close-up view of the gar- ments —- “the derail of the work is amazing” —- and wit nessing photographers’ bad behaviour — “if the models don’t stop and pose for them, the photographers will yell and hiss,” she said. With memories of her Paris experience still fresh, Gerath’s now fooking to embark on a carcer in Vancouver's fashion trade. She's hoping te find work in her field as a buyer or fashion forecaster, But) for now, she’s paying off her Paris ticket’ by working in’ the Kitchen at Lions | Gate Hospital. “It was fantastic,” she sighs. “PH be paving it off torever.” oo | Students contemplating a future in fashion may wish to check out the following edu- cational programy options Vancouver has to otter: ®@ Blanche Macdonald Centre tor Applicd Design: otters full- time and part-time programs in fashion design and = mer- chandising av its new facilities in Vancouver's City Square.
