West Vancouver council
faced a tough question last
week - when is a con-
venience store not a con-
venience - and aldermen
decided to wait for the New
Year to come up with an
answer.

The question arose from
an application by West Van-
couver businessman, Jack
Carthy, to open a gas station
and convenience store al
5775 Marine Drive.

The opposition arose from
neighbors on all sides of the
site.

“We don't want urban
packaging on our doorstep,”
Kenneth Powers, a
neighbour at 5734 Bluebell,
told the public hearing.

Council also” received
many letters warning thal a
convemience store would be
an open invitation for young
people to gather.

store could aggravate that.”

The site was formerly used
for a Shell gas station, but it
has been abandoned since
1978, following a fire there.
Carthy plans to reopen a
Shell station along with a
convenience store. His plans
for the site also include a

The plans require rezon-
ing the site from restncted
commercial use to multiple
commercial use.

Although many of the
complaining neighbors
agreed that a gas station
alone would be acceptable,

Carthy told council that a
pas stauon could not stand
financially alone.

After hearing all the
arguments, council couldn't
decide uf the neighborhood
would benefit or suffer from
the addition of a conve-
nience store.

The matter was deferred
until after Christmas to give
district staff time to collect
all sides of the argument.
