MAILBOX Crist challenges policy of an ‘ingrained bureaucracy’ Dear Editor: I would like to express my appreciation to al! the organizations and individuals who have indicated their sup- port in upholding my basic democratic rights as an elected official on North Vancouver District Council and conveyed their concerns to Mayor Mur- ray Dykeman, council, and tc me personally. In what can only be termed as anti-democratic an¢ frivolous, the council initiated a policy which, if allowed to stand, will put severe restric- tions on any elected official. Under this policy, a member of council wishing to attend a council committee to receive first-hand information to enhance his understanding and to carry out his obligations to DRAPERIES the voters, will first have to ask the alderman who is chairing that committee for permission to attend. This is something new on district council. The policy was initiated by the mayor. Unfor- tunately, it was supported by the other members of council! and is, a1 least partially, the result of their ignorance as to the basic tenets of civic democracy. And, although council as a result of public pressure has made changes to the original draft, the policy, even with the revisions, is still basically flaw- ed and must be rescinded in its entirety. The point is that an alder- man is still basically dependent on the goodwill of another pol- itician, i.e. another member of BY S. Again my sincere thanks to all individuals and organiza- tions -- community, business and labor, for their support, but I still need your help. I urge you to continue to press district council to remove this ill-conceived policy. I would appreciate receiving a copy of any letter you write to the mayor and council. This effort is not for my benefit alone but for all those who, at one time or another, in the interests of the public good, will have to challenge political incompetence or in- grained bureaucracy.
