IM MORRISON died in

1971. That, as they say.

was a good career
move. Ten years later, he
was a merchandising bo-
nanza with a couple of
bestsellers about his tur-
bulent life and a Doors
greatest hits compilation
that outsold any of his pre-
death albums.

Now, 20 years after Jim took his
last bath in Paris, comes Oliver
Stone’s turn to say, “‘He’s hot.
He's sexy. He’s dead.”’

For anyone who doesn’t know
the crash-and-burn story, Morrison
(perfectly imitated by Val Kilmer)
was a failed film student at UCLA
at age 20. His dark, mystical
poems found expression in a rock
group he formed with a fellow
classmate Ray Manzarek (Kyle
MacLaughlin). By the time Jim was
22, the Doors were performing
their hit Light My Fire on the Ed
Sullivan show to the horror of
network censors and the adulation
of rebellious youth,

A world-class party animal, Mor-
rison wallowed in sex and drugs to
the point where he could only be
relied on to be unreliable. At 27, a
fatal heart attack scotched even
that.

Now, you may be asking
yourself, who cares... some mor-
bid drunkard performing a loud
suicide for 2% hours.

Well, on the plus side, his
charisma and humor is in-
gratiating. Kilmer is terrific in a dif-
ficult role that concentrates almost
exclusively on Morrison’s seamy
side. The film also captures the
confusion of the times and the
concert footage crackles with
electricity. And let’s admit it, there
is a certain morbid curiosity about

course, Mamas a Britter herself,

Roy Dillon dohn Cusack) is a
con man content with small but
quick bar-roam scores. His lover,
Myra Langtry (Annette Bening). ts
skilled at elaborate stings for bie-
time money. Her plans to make
him a partner in crime unravel
when Roy’s mother Lily (Angelica
Huston) makes a surprise and
unwelcome appearance after
seven years.

A whirlpool of twists and double
crosses turn a light tale into a taut
study of losers. The acting by all

concerned is superb (Huston
earned an Oscar nomination), but
Pat Hingle as the ruthless crime
boss, Bobo, gives the suspense a
tazor’s edge.

Unfortunately, the Jim Morrison
movie isn’t very interesting. In the
end, he’s just another rock'n'roll
casualty dragged out for one more
trip to the cash register.
