SENTINEL SECONDARY School swept the juveniie and junior girls’ Vancouver and District crowns in recent volleyball action. The junior team, coached by Glen Close, defeated teams from New Westminster, Burnaby, Richmond, and the North Shore to reach the finals. The championship match con- firmed the strength of North Shore volleyball as Sentinel met and defeated a fine Handsworth team. The Vancouver and District championship capped an outstan- ding season for the Spartans. The girls were North Shore champions, won tournaments at Nanaimo, New Westminster, and UBC, and were undefeated in league play. Although success of the tezm was attributed to excellent team- work and depth of talent, several players received special recognition for their efforts. All-star awards were presented to Samantha Carter (New Westminster Invitational Tourna- ment), Shan Campbell (R.C. Palmer Tournament), and Tricia Underwoed (M.V.P. - UBC Tour- nament). Not to be outdone by their older classmates, the Sentinel juvenile volleyball players also defeated a strong New Westminster team in the Vancouver and District final. The Spartans, coached by Mrs. Bella Jakubiec, were North Shore champions, and victors in the McRoberts Tournament, (Elaine SENTINEL SCHOOL’S volieyball team topped its outstanding season by Cheung, M.V.P.). wianing the juvenile and jusior girls’ Vancouver and District champion- Sentinel’s fine volleyball tradi- ships. NSWC Flames burn the Buckeroos, melt Steelers THE NORTH Shore Winter Club Flames held on to a share of fourth place in West Coast Junior Hockey League standings and made it three wins in a row as they clobbered the Buckereos 11-4 in PoCo on December 1 and then downed the Steelers 6-1 at home on December 3. On December 3 at the Winter Club, a natural hat trick by John Cox early in the third period turned a game that was up for grabs into an easy 6-1 victory for the Flames. And it was a big win for the home team, enabling them to extend their lead over the Steelers to four points and to stay in a tie for fourth place with the White Rock Whalers. The only scoring of the first period came at the 4:26 mark as Mike Loftus tallied on the power play from Kevin Buhr and Ken Savage. Grandview dominated territorial play in the second period but were frustrated in their attempts to take command by the spectacular goaltending of Gary Knight. Some sloppy Flame clearing following a face-off in their own end Ied to the only Steeler goal midway through the middle frame to tie the score at 1-1. But with only 45 seconds remaining in the period, Andrew Merilees restored the Flames’ lead bagging what proved to be the game winner from Loftus and Buhr. In the third period, Cox connected with two quick goals only thirteen seconds apart — the first at 2:19 on a nifty set-up from Sean Morrison and Loftus and put your waste on a diet RECYCLE then the second at 2:32 from Jason Loewen to make it After Cox added his hat trick goal from Morrison and Brian Lee at 9:17 of the period, Loewen combin- ed with Morrison for the game’s final goal at 14:45 for the 6-1 Flame victory. Over the three periods the Flames outshot the Steelers 43-34. At PoCo on December i, the Flames rode roughshod over the Buckeroos as North Shore shooters fattened their scoring averages with an 11-4 lambasting of the PoCo crew. The Flames led 3-1 after one period, 7-! after two, and then outscored the Bucks 4-3 in the third for the 11-4 final. Despite the lopsided score, goaltender Kevin Rad- bourne was pivotal for the Flames in the early going. In the first period the Flames were outshot 14-9 but Radbourne held the Bucks to a single goal while his teammates countered with three at the other end of the ice. Savage had a big night for the Flames pacing the North Shore attack with a hat trick and three assists. Other point getters for the Flames were Merilees and Buhr with a goal and three assists each; Loewen and Morrison with a goal and an assist; Brad Kytlo, Rich Haldane, Loftus and Cox with a goal each, and Rob McLaughiin with three assists. The Flames were outshot 36-35 over the three periods.
