THE KIDS ARE THERE DRIVE WITH CARE! bedroom station that will accom- modate the three ambulances and spare car and the crews that operate out of the hospital. The expansion, which will bring the LGH station up to the mini- mum standard facility required by the Emergency Health Services Commission, is badly needed by a service responding to a steadily in- creasing demand on the North Shore. The LGH station receives more than 300 calls a month. “Our station was originally designed to accommodate one 24- hour car and its crews,’’ says Tim Jones, unit chief of the North Vancouver Station of the Provin- cial Ambulance Service. ‘‘We now have three ambulances and a spare car that must be kept heated, warmed-up and ready to go at any moment, a full-time crew of 12 and more than 30 part-time people on call.’”” The renovated facility will pro- vide a covered, protected area for all three of the main emergency vehicles and a convenient parking area with phig-in heaters for the spare car. : “There is a four-person night crew on duty between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. and if we’re busy, which is usually the case, we bring in some of the part-time people to staff the other cars,’”’ says Jones. ‘‘So there are always several people trying to get some sleep on the two beds in the bedroom or the couch in the day room or the cot in the room that doubles as a kitchen and an office. We’ve really outgrown the space.”’ Renovations will result in an additional bedrowm, office and locker space and a kitchen facility for the crews. The 60 square metres of space on the hospital’s ground floor cur- rently teased by the British Col- umbia Buildings Corporation will be expanded to 89 square metres plus an additional 98 square metres of enclosed garage space.
