a a OPEN LETTER TO NORTH VAN CITY COUNCIL As a new resident of the City of North Vancouver, | am very displeased with the parking restrictions in the Lonsdale area, - specifically in the 100 block of East 4th Street. Since meving into a small apartment on East 4th St. in June of this year, my wife and I have been constantly annoyed by a specific parking restriction on our street. [ am referring to the signs on the north side of the road teading: *‘NO PARKING, TUESDAY, 8 a.m. to 10 am., STREET CLEANING’ and ap- propriately similar on the south applicable to Wednesdays. In my view, weekly street clean- ing is not only a great waste of taxpayer’s money, but is alsa a considerable inconvenience to the residents who are forced to park their vehicles on the strect. For reasons unknown, this regu- lar ‘service’ is provided only to the residents/businesses of the east and west 100 blocks of 2nd Street through 12th Street. Should these streets become par- ticularly dirty due to heavy traffic or construction in the area, ! could understand the regular cleaning. Rather, these streets are travelled mostly by local residents and collect enough dirt along the curb to be cleaned on a semi- annual or annual basis. The procession of vehicles which accompany the street cleaner is almost comical. As I watched W/V school supported Dear Editor: Regarding Glenmore Community and the Collingwood School expansion. The two or three self-appointed members supposedly representing the views of our community are practising tactics which they ac- cuse our West Vancouver municipal elected members of do- ing. These few at a secret meeting decided for us to oppose the ex- pansion of Collingwood School in court. A lawyer friend of one of these people was chosen to do the legal work, and we are solicited by phone to support their cause fi- nancially. I feel that we were all given ade- quate hearings to our concerns, views and expressions of the rezoning of this property. New and different communication was established with the board members and our community. The injustices of the past do not nec- essarily need to continue. We are awake now and en garde. The municipal and school board meetings row have a larger atten- dance. Citizens are becoming more involved. As the only owner/occupier of the largest property adjacent to Collingwood and a resident of 25 years, I welcome the children and their teachers under my communi- ty umbrella, and have forgiven past misunderstandings. The in- vocation at the opening of each municipal meeting calls upon God’s will be done, and this | am willing to accept. Penny Majors West Vancouver reat their performance only this morn- ing, 1 wish to enlighten you to their activities. Initially, as well as most interest- ingly, two by-law enforcement vehicles pass down the street, their drivers writing parking violation tickets for each errantly parked vehicle. This unquestionably generates another sizable source of income for the City of North Vancouver. Secondly, a truck and driver follow in close pursuit making less frequent stops. The driver's duties 1 find most puzzling. From obser- vation, | have noted this individu- al to lead the street cleaner along the street, make occasional stops where he hops out of his truck to Pick up stray garbage, and toss it in the path of the approaching street sweeper. His duties raise an interesting question: why does he not toss the trash into the trash can in the bed of the truck, there- by eliminating the need for the street sweeper and its expensive union driver? Sight of the sweeper is really quite anti-climactic at this point because the futility of its efforts becomes iminediately apparent. Straining to ‘curb’ my cynicism, I have concluded that the purpose of this bi-weekly entourage is not to keep the side streets of North Vancouver spotlessly clean, but rather to procure large amounts of fine monies. As you may have guessed by now, my wife and I are recent vic- tims of the by-law enforcement officers. We unfortunately have two automobiles and one motor- cycle in our household and they were all parked in violation this morning. Like many of the resi- dents on our street, we have no underground or alley parking fa- cilities and are forced to compete for the few cherished spots on the street. This is a real problem. Please look into it. Tan A. Morrison North Vancouver TIRES P77 This brand new steel-belted radial revolutionizes the concept of an all-weather tire.
