manager retires

DOUG MackAY, who rose from
project engineer to the top posi-
tions with the Greater Vancouver
Regional District, Water District
and Sewerage and Drainaye
District, is leaving the revional
agencies after 35 vears of service.

He was the first regional man-
ager of the GVRD.

The resignation is effective May
1, 1987. Advertisements for the
position will be placed nationally.

Mackay, 57, plans to establish a
vousulting practice on a limited
basis, specializing in local gov-
ernment and engineering matters.

GVRD chairman Don Ross said
that MacKay has been an outstan-
ding administrator and that his
floss will be felt deeply by the
region.

Born in Canora, Saskatchewan,
MacKay moved to Vancouver in
1941. He obtained a Bachelor of
Applied Science degree in Civil
Engineering from UBC and on
graduation joined the Water and
Sewerage Districts, in 1952.

In 1982 he was appointed

service.

This year, he was honored by
the 45,000-member American
Water Works Association, an in-
ternational organization, and hy
the Canadian
Municipal Administrators.

The GVRD, the umbrella
organization for the various
regional agencies, is a federation
of Greater Vancouver's 18
municipalities and electoral areas.

It has about 550 employees and
provides services such as water
supply, regional parks, air pollu-
tion control, sewage treatment and
disposal, solid waste disposal,
labor relations, housing and hospi-
tal planning.
