South Seas cruises are easy to book (if expensive). The others are a challenge. To start with, very few agents have the information on South American cruises (or Indian Ocean ones) and more important, the cruise lines operating in these areas heartily distike North Americans as passengers. I've fought the red-tape to get on a Costa Line cruise in South America and let me tell you ----. So you've decided on the Carib- bean. Consider Length of cruise: Anything less than seven days is a waste of money. You simply need that much time to unwind and get into the feel of things. Anything over 14 days is excessive. My favorites are the 10-day in- ter-island cruise around the various islands and the t4-day trans-canal idea through the Panama. What to pack: Sunsuits, shorts, bathing suits, casual pants. For dinner — guys need a jacket. Ladies need whatever they’d wear to their favorite neighborhood res- taurant. Also, one dressy outfit, (can be recycled). For guys, a suit © with tie and for ladies, a cocktail dress. There is one dressy night per week. There is also one costume party and if you’ve got a pair of outfits left over from your last Kinsmen Convention, pack them. Other- wise, the ship will provide raw ma- terials. Participatios. is fun but not obligatory. Meals aboard: On boarding you will be asked to make a choice of meal hours. Meals are usually in two “‘sittings’’. | always opt for the early dinner as there’s so much activity in the evening [ don’t want to be sipping soup at 10 p.m. As for breakfast, if you don’t make it to the early one you can always have it on deck until about 10 a.m. There’s always a midnight buffet in case you're feeling peckish. Laundry: Every ship gives you guidebook detailing services. They do a fine job on laundry. Your cabin steward acts as ‘‘mother’’ and handles the transfer and return. Bars: If you can — and press for this — run a bar tab. It makes tip- ping so easy! Just drink as you like for the duration. The last evening aboard you’ll get the tab. Check it, pay it and add 15 per cent asa tip. Pve never been refused this courtesy, but I know others: who have. Arrange it with the Bar Cap- tain immediately on boarding. Tips: The second-last day aboard you must get your act together. For this, you need cash. - The people you tip are: *Cabin steward(s). Three dollars per person per day is the average. If you have two, either divide the amount and put it in separate envelopes or do it in one, addressed to both. * Dining Room Steward (and bus boy). This is tricky. On some ships you tip the steward and he looks after his own staff. This is something you must ask about. The same $3 per person per day applies. If the bus-boy is included, add $1 a day (per person). * Maitre d’: | always get slamm- ed for this. Tip him only if he’s done some special service for you. I get fed-up with many of them — glad-handers, all. If he’s been “special’’, slide him an envelope with $50 in it.
