The 29-year-old third degree black belt karate instructor leaves today (Sept. 24) with the 14 other black belt karate competitors that make up the Canadian team. An estimated 49 countries will be represented in the tournament. Five members of the Canadian team are from B.C. Darbyshire and Yas Yamamoto, 27, both train with the Shito-Ryu karate school. Together they have the team’s best success record in international karate competition. In 1983, Darbyshire placed sixth in the open weight division of black belt free fighting at the world karate championships held LET’SG in Cairo, Egypt. Yamamoto, meanwhile, finished first overall in black belt kata (forms) at the 1985 Com- monwealth Games. For Darbyshire, who is chief in- structor at North Vancouver’s Shito-Ryu Itosukai Karate-Do school, the Sydney championships will be the fourth time he has rep- resented Canada in international competition. Darbyshire’s North Vancouver school, located at 1326 Main Street, teaches traditional Japanese karate techniques, which em- phasize mental! discipline, physical conditioning, tournament aar- ticipation and adherence to rules of courtesy. The school offers classes for students seven years of age and up. Call 987-4244 for information. Saints burn Nationals NORTH SHORE Saint Alice Saints won its first game of the Vancouver Metro Senior Soccer League season as the team downed Norihwest Nationals 3-1 at Cleve- ‘and Park Sept. 21. In a closely fought contest the Saints struck early when Ken Powers made a run down the left wing then crossed to Terry Gaines who put the bail in the net. The Saints had a few more scor- ing chances early in the first half but could not find the net again until late in the game. Though the Nationals fought back well to gain control of the game, the team had trouble con- verting scoring opportunities. Nationals pressure finally forced the Saints into conceding a penal- ty, but Craig Henderson, filling in for the injured Russell Fox, made the save of the game to keep the score at 1-0, The Nationals eventually got on the scoreboard when Saints cen- treback Ed Thomas misplayed a pass back over the goalkeeper’s head. Lorne Loiselle capped a fine game scoring twice for the Saints in the last 20 minutes of the game.
