Whytecliff Marina to be saved?_| THE PIER at Whytecliff Marina may be preserved for pedestrian recreational use, pending talks with a charter company operation and ap- proval of the $10,000 needed for upgrading by the District of West Vancouver. Annual maintenance costs, not in- cluding storm damage, will cost the district about $2,000. Ald. Diana Hutchinson made the motion at the Sept. 15 meeting of council to instruct district staff to proceed with the conversion of the pier to a pedestrian access area only. “The cost of keeping the buoys for sailboats is prohibitive .. they can find moorage at Horseshoe Bay,’’ said Hutchinson. Thanks to the open location and backwash from B.C. Ferries, Whytecliff Marina is not a very ‘desirable place for the moorage of boats,”’ according to Hutchinson. **But it would be a shame to see this facility go out of the communi- ty .. .1'm sure that the pier will be well used,’’ she said. Steven Panz and Warren McIntyre of Vancouver Fishing and Guiding Services, asked cowici! to consider leaving five or six of the buoys at the former marina. Their company was permitted to operate out of the marina this summer and enjoyed such a successful first year that they wish to make arrangements for next year, ‘“*We were so successful that we were able to employ up to 12 students this year,’’ Panz said. Panz and McIntyre will meet with district staff during the week to discuss a new arrangement. Staff has suggested that the floats and buoys may be kept if the charter company agrees to help with its maintenance. Presents WESTERN CANADA TRAVELTALE FILM NARRATED IN PERSON.
