Lifting process for bridge sections tested

THE Lions Gate
Bridge was closed early
Tuesday morning for
several hours to allow
testing of deck replace-
ment equipment.

Said Lions Gate Project
spokeswoman) Pam Ryan,
“We were testing some of the
equipment on the lower-and-
litt. The test was successful.
They did a load test (with a
proxy weight, not an actual
deck piece), testing its ability
to handle the weight.

“That's a standard final
check to make sure that’s in
working order before we
move to the deck replace-
Arent process.”

In May, scheduled clo-
sures of the bridge were
postponed after Lions Gate
Project officials, in consulta-
tion with the contractor
American Bridge/SureSpan,

decided they weren't satis
tied with the engineering and
equipment procedures tor
the deck lower and lift
Process.

It was determined that
the precess to connect aad
disconnect the continuity
link as designed would be
too slow and jeopardized
chances to reopen the bridge
to traffic by the 6 a.m. dead-
line envisioned.

The design of the conti-
nuity link is being reviewed.
The fink connects new and
old deck pieces to prevent
sway,

Fifty-four deck pieces,
weighing in at 105 tonnes
cach, the majority of which
measure 55 feet wide (17 m}
by 64 feer long (19.5 m),
will eventually replace the
existing bridge deck. Deck
pieces will be lifted into posi-
ton by a moveable. crane
called a jacking traveller.

Deck replacement was to
take place during night-time
closures throughout the
sunumer. Ryan said this week
