8 - Friday, April 18, 1986 ~ North Shore News 2 Doug Collins © get this straight e Are you pleased that you are living in | “apartheid- free zones” ,» you residents of the two North Vancouvers? If.so, pass a vote of thanks to Brother John Braithwaite, the Dr. Feelgood of local politics. As for me, I do not feel at all good. I recently wasted a sunny Saturday attending the annual general meeting of the Vancouver City Savings Credit Union. A member thereof, I wanted to say a few words about the new mutual fund it has set up. The deal is called an “‘ethical f growth fund’’, meaning it will be untainted by shares in any cor- poration that deals with South Africa. But my lips remained un- : characteristically shut because the issue never got to.the floor. The directors of the board saw to that, most of them being socialists like. Brother Braithwaite and knowing : - that, team! ever takes over it'll be ‘goodbye; what’s best for us.’ The term.: ‘ethical growth fund’? signals ‘ smugness “and hypocrisy. But let’s not be too hard on the credit union. Much of the’ Western world suffers from ¢ the same lack of discernment, and is devoted to :the: same- double standards.. Which: could be the death of us. “Remember the Polish crisis, for’ J example?.:Remember Genera! Jackboot ... America and countries like South Africa, we can deal with. We can ‘even give them free bucks. Much of this is the fault of the media. In the age of television, the media have become a Cyclops (you know, the big. guy with the one eye). The eye works well enough in places where Cyclops can roam at will, but not at all elsewhere. That’s why the North Van aldermen and the credit union biggies beat their. breasts over South Africa.-They see South African cops chasing rioters. They see CBC “profiles” on Winnie ‘and Nelson Mandela in which those two South African commies ‘come out looking noble. But if Cyclops, and don't forget to. shut the door on your way out. Unless he’s invited back for famine relief purposes, that is. If the tales Cyclops tells weren't selective, there would be a whole sackful of ethical growth funds. There would certainly .be one for those who object to helping China, our current favorite of the ‘communist world. According to evidence given at “the trial of the Gang of Four, Pek- ing has wiped out at least 20 million of its own citizens. Sadly, Cyclops wasn't there to record those events. (Some estimates put the figure'at 60 million, but we'll ‘be conservative.) |. . Never mind, China has “one man one vote’’ of.a ‘sort and isn't where” the.
