ww oo 38 - Sunday, March 17, 1985 - North Shore News Cruising news and hirty years ago, anyone boasting of taking a cruise won himself instant celebrity status. After all, cruising was the pastime of the rich (old and rich?) or very cosmopolitan traveller hardly to be found living next door to you or me. There was a lot of mysti- que about cruising. Didn't we all see those movies showing cruise passengers in full evening regalia frowning at the caviar while dining at the captain's table? And the wine glasses! Pos- itively decadent to Cana- dians who were used to eating at the kitchen table (all but Sundays) washing down the meat and potatoes with milk for kids, tea for adults and maybe a bottle of beer for Dad on a hot day. if you want a bit of ins- tant nostalgia, try to remember some of the res- taurants you ‘‘dined”’ in -.1 remember one arborite ar- cade with bent spoons, slov- enly waitresses and greasy French fries - hardly a train- ing ground for the captain's table! So, 30 years down the road it’s amazing how many of us routinely include a cruise as part of our holiday plans. And, although cruises have become a lot more ca- sual, some of the mystique still hangs on - after ali, Ca- nadians are sensitive souls who don’t like making asses of themselves. Here are some of the questions | am frequently asked: : What clothes do I need? For daytime aboard ship - bathing suits, shorts, alters, etc., with cover-ups to wear in the lounges. That's partly: for decency’s sake and partly "1(604'880-0321 16041681-1646 Vintage Tour ‘85 Spectacular wine journey around the Alps - Catch the charm of Cen- tal Europe’s countryside and get to know it’s people. 28 days, 5 countries 52,399 {airfore not included) New Office Hours Mon. 9. Don’t be a walking skin show, Far evenings aboard ship, travel- wise ‘by Barbara McCreadie . Pee | men usually are expected to wear a jacket, women a dress or the equivalent. There's always one ‘‘for- mal"’ evening where the dark suits (and sometimes dinner jackets) and cocktail dresses come out. There's usually One costume party, too, and # little forethought saves you robing-up in bedsheets. Who, and what amount, do I tip? Your two stewards - cabin and dining room - come first. Each gets about $2 per person per day, presented on the last full day of cruising in a neat envelope. The busboy is given half the amount, also in an envelope. If the bar has allowed you to run a tab, it is paid on the fast day as well and you add 10-15 per cent to the total. Otherwise, tip as you would in a cocktail lounge at home. Tipping the matire d' is a bit more difficult - I've been on cruises where] hardly saw the guy - and he hardly saw a tip, either. If he has worked his butt off for you, you'll have to decide what it was worth and tip accor- dingly. How shotld right cruise? First, decide what part of the world you want to see. Then, go to a travel agent and get brochures on all the ships cruising the area. Generally, the cheaper cruises are on older ships and the passengers will be younger. Hf booking one of these, don't choose the cheapest cabins (lower decks, inside). You will probably find the air condi- tioning ‘iffy’? making the cabins stuffy. Almost all cruise ships are ‘tone class’ mean- ing that no matter what you pay for your cabin, all the other ship facilities are the sume. In the old days, ships had three or so ‘classes’? and a third class passenger was locked-out of the first class lounges, decks and dining rooms. Mind you, the third class Jounge was alten where the action was in the evening and you'd catch the first class passengers sneaking down the stairs! What is the average age of cruise passengers? Many cruises refuse children under a certain age - thank goodness! Otherwise, the average age is just about what youll find in January in Waikiki. Short cruises appeal to a younger crowd who haven't the time or the advice money tions. You'll find that cruise passengers are a healthy, lively lot and age barriers don’t exist - eighteen year olds join with people in their cighties. You should see some of the dance classes!
