They did that with a pair of
games that showed why soc-
cer deserves to live in North
America. They were able to
put style, grace, guts and skill
together into a fluid and ex-
citing performance that had
the fans once again feeling a
part of what was happening
on the field.

That too is something that
has been missing. For a
while, and for many, many
reasons, the fans weren't
feeling that the ‘Caps were
their team anymore.

It could have been the
backroom butchering with
the Giles-Bridgewater in
cidents, it could have been
the public style of manage.
ment under Bob Carter, or
the so-called lack of excite-
ment of last year’s team. it
could have been the size and,
somehow, empty feetng of
our great plastic bubble
dome, or the thin, dull
cahbre of teams hke Toronto
Blizzard and Tulsa

the indoor game Whatever it

was, the fans and the teams
drew apart.

Until last week when
disaster threatened and the
magic started to come back
again. And with the magic,
the fun, both for the crowd
and the team, right in the
midst of this imminent pain-
ful turmoil.
