All - Wednesday, November 2, 1983 - North Shore News Es election countdown Hall to battle bus cutbacks BUS SERVICE CUTS in North Vancouver are a key issue for City Alderman Ralph Hall who ts seeking a fourth term on City council in the November 19 election. He has pledged to continue his fight against threatened major reductions in the service. ‘‘What B.C. Transit has in mind is less service for higher fares. If they succeed in im- plementing what they refer to as service ‘adjustments,’ they will make it much less conve- nient for people to use the buses, ridership will go down and that most likely would lead to more cuts in service,’”’ he charges. Hall said a major problem is that no one appears to real- ly want to operate a decent transit service because of financial pressures. ‘‘B.C. Transit people seem to run the service in a totally negative fashion. Budgetary considerations seem to be paramount. Instead of pro- moting greater ridership, it’s chop, chop, chop. “If City Council ap- proached its fire protection and policing services in the same manner, we would be run out of town,’’ he declared. ‘‘There is a tremendous amount of residential con- struction going on, yet several sections of the City are virtually without bus ser- vice, and many more people will be greatly inconvenienc- SFE5C © 5M berth © cocrx 60 Watts Rk Mo, © A cot OW 20) Khiz ef Moo uiitinigy Lreagotts Progr prea kee ds withs agers If YOu) © Allee NCORD D The HPL 1041 Combines pertormance engineered high fidelity features and separate tocass and tretole Controls SPEAKER SYSTEM 20 Of Magnet cared) wtres Concord Package: i yer fer ben rhein feooroag Pig gh poerforrmcane @& sound syste cit cr rescasconcbole porte look fryer fosettvere Train © cme c carer feor three ce cote cored thoes Loerst tinves thr c cdsseattes fer bs! Among other assignments he has undertaken since first being elected in 1981, Rowntree lays special em- phasis on his contribution to keeping a tight rein’ on municipal spending — in par- ticular, council’s implemen- tation of restraint programs to save expenditures and thus control taxes. **These money-saving pro- grams,’’ he says, *‘provided a total minimum annual saving of $503,000°" in the current year.
