RCMP looking for van arsonists A van stolen in Burnaby at 1 a.m. Monday was later driven to North Vancouver and set on fire. North Van RCMP detec- tives are looking for two men who neighbours saw running away from the van moments before it burst into flames on MacGowan Avenue near Hope Road. Also being sought is a blue Malibu which was seen following the white Ford Econoline 200 van = and which the two people runn- ing from the van may have used in their getaway. Two residents of the area saw the van roaring down Hope and then turn on to MacGowan at about 7:15 am, with the Malibu close behind. They saw two men get out of the van and run south on MacGowan, at the same time they noticed the van was on fire. Taxi driver drove while disqualified Some North Shore taxi drivers are reported to be driving while under suspension and one who was caught was sentenced Wednesday in North Vancouver Provincial Court. Ronaid Baird, aged 33, of 205-136 East 18th Street in North Vancouver, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified after being charged on October 18. Crown counsel Dave DeWitt said that Baird was charged after a RCMP of- ficer was called to the North Shore Taxi headquarters at 250 Pemberton Street because someone in the company reported that some taxi drivers were driving while under suspension. DeWitt said the officer informed the taxi supervisor to inform those = divers involved that 11 was illegal to drive while under suspen Sion The officer was just leaving, DeWitt said, when he saw a cab driver enter the rear of the lot When the driver) Ronald Baird. was asked tor his Inence he said it had been suspended two months ago In court.
