The “Third Purser” by virtue

The purser helped sort that .

out. The bartender was the
only person aboard except
me who drank Canadian
Club. We worked out a
rationing system, that made
four bottles last for 17 days.
His father was the “night
guard” on the ship and
helped Suzy play bingo in
four languages (none of
which was English!).

One other “first-classer”

began to join. the group.

Every night he appeared for
dinner, alone, in a variety of
velvet suits and many beads
and trinkets. I found out
later that he was a “King of
the Gypsies.” Soon, he
managed to start a flaming
affair with one of the girls
from down below—who’s
single redeeming feature was
that she kept a tiny spider
monkey attached to a chain
and wore him- on_ her
shoulder.

For a while, she vaccillated
between the king and
another man who kept a tiny
Pekinese puppy under his
jacket. Suzy liked the guy
with the pup because he
loaned it to her when he was
making a play for the
monkey lady.

The journey progressed.
Ten days of sea with never a
sight of land until—the
Azores. We sneaked past

young. But,
he gave’ up—and decided to

I spoke to the steward in
the first-class lounge. “Could
I use the library for a party?
“Why, of course, Signora!”
He had visions of the upper-

crust gathered together for a
final farewell.

“Snacks?”
“Leave it tome, Signora!”

At the appointed time,
Suzy was ready to guide our

group of friends through the -

maze separating the classes.
We started with the
champagne and when it ran
out, Asti Spumanti. I
pressed the. odd glass on the
steward and his waiters. It
was one memorable party!

The singing got a bit loud.
The Contessa dropped in for
her share. The whole group
parted, with sad farewells, in
Italy.

I had a letter from the
Contessa from the family
villa in Nice.

“Do come to visit me—
and please bring a fourth for
bridge!”
