ist unveils Tavetter: The Protecting Veil, Thrinos for Solo Cello. Britten: Third Suite for Cello, Op. 87. Virgin Classics CD #0777 7590522 9, Steven Isserlis - cello, London Symphony Orchestra, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky conducting. ike Gorecki’s Third Symphony of only a year ago, we _ have here a runaway classic best-seller, with all the earmarks of becoming a world of pops. The Protecting Veil is Virgin Classics’ hottest release to date, having topped the British charts, and is well on the way to similar success here in the colonies. Cellist Steven Isserlis has retain- ed first-performance rights worldwide and is now, fortunately, in our own little colony to present the Canadian premiere in Van- couver on Sunday, Aug. 8, as part of the Vancouver Recital Society's Chamber Music Festival — making this recording extra attractive as a memento to what is bound to be one of the best and most memora- _ ble instremental concerts this year. - Written specifically for Isserlis in the fall of 1987, The Protecting Veil was inspired by the Orthodox Feast of the Protecting Veil of the Mother of God, which com- memorates the appearance of the Virgin Mary at the Church of Vlacherni, Constantinople, in the early 10th century. The cello plays aimost con-_ tinuously throughout The Protec- ‘ting Veils 45 minutes with an im- pressive range of dynamism and emotion that weaves seductively _ between, through and over the or- chestral parts. This music clearly nother crossover into the Ross MacDonald CLASSICAL MUSIC won't remind you of anything else. And, like Gorecki’s Third, this is music that bears up to concen- trated listening — and even en- courages it, Producer Andrew Keener has chosen well in roun- ding out the recording with Brit- ten’s Third Suite for Cello and Tavener’s other Issertis-oriented work, Thrinos. The impetus for writing The Pro- tecting Veil originated with Isserlis himself who was actively looking to commission a new work for cello in 1987, “Thad it in my mind for a long time that there was this composer, John Tavener, who wrote in a Rus- sian Orthodox style,’’ explained the cellist. “My father was Rus- | GET YOUR BEST BUY | ON A & WIBREP on EBrrcoil Birney | e BEST PRICES IN TOWN! «MANY MODELS TO CHOOSE ¢ BEST SELECTION IN TOWN «KNOWLEDGEABLE | sian and I've always loved Russian Orthodox music ever since | was a little boy.” So Issertis phoned Chester Music in London — Tavener’s publisher — and got the composer’s phone number from them. “The next thing | knew,” isserlis gasped, ‘‘he'd written it! Just like Thrinos which arrived one day through the post completely cut of the blue.” Isserlis was immediately thrilled with what was presented to him: “can't say what | want from a particular piece,’ he reflects, “but can say that The Protecting Veil was it. Its extreme sense of beauty is very important to me as is the sense of journey through the I JUVENILE SHEET SETS OR COMFORTERS Spruce up your child's bedroom this summer with these exciting patterns in & sheets sets or comforters. t Sst teres Available patterns: piece, “The music is simple but with an extraordinary sense of form. It's so satisfying and, incidentally, it’s wonderful writing for the cello.’ Barb Martineau, publicist for the Recital Society, waxes just as ef- fusive over this unique music: “The Recital Society feels very privileged to have the opportuntiy to present the Canadian premiere of this work,” she says, ‘because it’s not very often — in fact it’s very rare — that a piece by a modern, living, breathing com- poser receives the sort of public acclaim and commercial success that The Protecting Veil has.
