The Canadian Coast Guard (ship safety and hovercraft), Van- couver Port Corporation (Port Police), Emergency Health Ser- vices (B.C. Ambulance), North Vancouver District Fire Depart- ment (fireboat), the chemical in- dustry (CanadianOxy and (barge towing comipany), and Burrard Clean Lid. (petroleum industry emergency responder) will be involved in the exercise. Approximately 35 to 40 people will be directly involved in the ex- ercise, Participating by telephone only will be Transport Canada and the Provincial Emergency Program. The exercise, Transcaer (Trans- portation Community Awareness Emergency Response} Marine Emergency Exercise, will test emergency response planning, training and capabilities. The scenario addressed by the training exercise, scheduled to take place at 9 a.in., involves the collision of a ship transporting couver Island pulp mill and an inbound grain ship in poor weather, The vessels collide in the ship- ping Jane southeast of Lighthouse Park. The collision results in damage to the caustic soda transport barge as well as damage to a loaded sulfuric acid rail car located on the deck of the barge. According to company spokesman Terry Litchfield, the company supports 24-hour emergency response teams that train on a.monthly basis for any potential spill.
