world rankings over the next
decade. Roxburgh, an accoun-
tant by trade, knows a thing or
two about numbers.

Roxburgh has four
Canadian and 13 B.C. amateur
championships; he won the
1973 and 1985 provincial tour-
naments on the North Shore.
As the RCGA’s first director of
development he is responsible
for stecring the country’s best
up-and-comers to take on the
world. It’s a big task for
Roxburgh, but he’s ready for
the challenge.

“Iv’s going to be a lot of
fun,” says the 48-year-old
Roxburgh.

And fun is the name of the
game these days for both
young and old. Tiger Woods

children and teens. North
America’s senior citizens are liv-
ing longer and playing more.
There are more courses that
don’t command hefty green
fees or membership dues.
When they aren’t swinging,
golf fans could be watching
TV’s Golf Channel or flipping
through the pages of Seinvsng?,

a new golf magazine with a
punk rock edge. Golf is quickly
becoming the people's game.

The RCGA has donc its
part to cultivate golfers with its
wildly successful FurureLinks
childrens clinics.

Roxburgh will staff the first
of the RCGA’s planned act-
work of satellite offices in
Vancouver. Others are planned
for Calgary, Montreal and
Halifax. Decentralization will
allow developing players to be
closer to top-notch courses and
coaches. The next step is to
enter Canadian players in all the
top tournaments.

“You've got ro get out and
play against the best players on
the best golf courses and test
yourself and get the experience.
We're going to be putting
together a database of the tour-
naments we feel are the impor-
tant ones and try to get our
players in there.”

He took up the sport as a
13-year-old at Marine Drive
Golf Club in Vancouver and
played his first tournament a
year later. He’s the only
Canadian to win the Simon
Bolivar Trophy in 1981 at

Venezucla and was part of
Canada’s Commonwealth
Treophy-winning team in 1975.

He never curned pro and he
has no regrets. He got into the
business of golf course develop-
mene and management eight
years ago at Langley's Belmont
Golf Course. Before the RCGA
came calling, he was helpin

“Professional goif wasn’t
going to be for me. 1 like to
travel a little bir, but the lite of
a touring pro is tough. They're
gone for two out of every three
wecks of the year. It’s giam-
orous on one hand, on the
other it’s not.”

If he were younger, things
might be different. Unlike the
1970s, there are thriving, lucra-
tive pro tours in Asia, South
America, Africa and Europe,
not to mention the Nike Tour
in North America. Those
options weren’t open when
Roxburgh was developing his
game. But they could be attrac-
ve if cither of his sons Jordy
(9) or James (13) decides to
turn pro.
