Manhattan makes no_ sense. Nothing seems to work on its own, yet when you put it all tegether, it’s a complex piece of perfect design. New York City’s four fashion- able corners generate mcre elec- tricity and more eccentricity than anywhere on the. globe. There’s nothing .comparable, nothing closer to both fashion Utopia and purgatory. This quick list of New York - news is not a definitive guide “because there could never be one, but a little clothing trivia to pack away in your closet. Designers choose the tube You'll soon be seeing more than just handy slicers and zirconian rings on the shopping channel. A lot of New York’s designers and major retailers think the way of. the near future is to sell through home shopping networks. The president of Perry Ellis, Robert Duffy, says it’s a natural that they'll move in that direction “soon. Designer Louis Deil’Olio says he can see it being done as a TV show — turn on your favorite designer. Calvin Klein thinks it would be great to be able to sell threugh TV, and. maybe it would replace catalogues. CEO of Sak’s Fifi Avenue Phillip Miller says it’s a concept he’d be. interested. in learning more about. New York scene New York is alive and well, ac- cording to its native designers. They have fallen back in Jove with .. the city, since it’s being refurbish- “ed, and are rediscovering its many attractions. New clubs are popping up all over, A place called Super Studio is the hottest spot in town, accord- ‘ing to designer Louis Dell’Olio. Not only. does every top photographer in the city use it as a photo location, it’s supposed to . be similar to the former Studio 54 in its popularity and atmosphere. The new and improved Gug- -genheim Museum is popular. . Calvin Klein especially likes the new SoHo branch which he says . Tepresents the energy’ and excite- ment of Manhattan. Carolina Herrera is also fascinated by the museum and feels it’s got the best the city has to offer. _Broadway is- making a come- back, with everybody -who’s any- body in the fashion biz strolling down the avenue to take in a play. What used to be filled with dir- ty streets and deserted seats is now where locals such as Steven Stoiman and Andrea Jovine hang out. Favorite eaterics. of designers include The Lipstick Cafe. The outdoor cafe/restaurant is great for fashion watching. Adrienne Vittadini describes it as a place where the people create and become the setting. Michact Kors, however, feels that Tavern on the Green, which also has seating outdoors, is the ultimate restaurant for visitors and New Yorkers alike. SoHo, with its newly refurbish- ed cobblestone streets, is the neighborhood. Donna Karan likes the boutique and cappuccino- bar-filled streets of Greene and Wooster, and says the area is like taking the past and going into the future, Anna Sui says a whole new energy has entered the area in the last year because of new shops opening. (She mentions. in par- ticular John Fiuevog’s store there as well as a boutique called Dean and Deluca.) The recently revamped Bryant Park packs in fashion elitists. ‘Cathy Hardwick walks her dogs there, explaining it’s now the only civilized area around. Designer Steve Fabrikant likes it too, describing the renovation as tak- ing 42nd Street (infamous for its seedy gutters) and turning it into Central Park. Qther designers prefer. the cre- ativeenergy of Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park. isaac: Mizrahi feels the park acts as a refuge from the city because the area’s bohemian residents will never let it become established. Christian Francis Roth says it’s the grunge fashion capital of New York right now, and it will be the next hot trend’s headquarters, too. Fabrics go organic The natural color scheme which is shown every spring is being taken seriously by New York’s de- signers, They are now using natu- ral color tones in natural fabrics that are made with organically ‘grown fibres. Adrienne Vittadini states that since the concern for the Earth is on their minds, it’s only natural for designers to reveal their sup- port through clothes. The down-to-earth fashions feature simply shaped clothes in naturally textured ‘fabrics and naturaily dyed colors. The trend in color is no color. Designers including Adrienne Vit- tadini, Karen Kane, Liz Claiborne and Evan Picone are showing white, sand, cream, stone, wheat, soft brown and curry in vegetable-dyed cotton and natu- ‘rally flecked linen.
