“IF you have seen the “movie Terminator, you know what I mean when I say androids are taking over the world. Of course, realistically, the idea of man-made robots going around killing everyone is a lit- _Ue far fetched. But if you really ‘stop to think about it, you might see that this crazy notion isn’t so far fetched after all. Recently, T was watching a program on TV that was “demonstrating the latest in arti- cial intelligence technology. 1 i know that what was on the * show surely wasn’t the “latest”, but it does give us an idea of where we're heading. On the ° program, they showed these little computer * brains on wheels, These little hi-tech toys. had sensors built onto the. outside of: them so that they knew when they had hit a wall. The scientists put these expen: gadgets through complicated mazes with the intenton that che litde computer brain would learn the shape of the maze by trial and erre The computer brain cannot see, so the first time going through the maze it hit almost every wall and appeared to have failed completely. But as it was hitting all che walls of the maze. it was recording ev i hit and the di: heading each time. So, the see- ond rime through the maze, it knew what direction not to take and calculated the next possible way it could go, thus doing a lot better in the maze. By the third time, it could run the maze without hitting a sin- gle wall. I'm sure that this invention is the simplest of it’s kind, but it does tell us that we can create a robot that learns an it’s own withour having to have every- thing programmed into it. It’s far from a deadly android, but I believe that the speed at which modern technology is advancing, we'll have exact replicas of people that are completely mechanical within a matter of a couple of decades. * These robot people would probably be used to do things that real people just can’t do. They'll probably make our lives a lot easier and will be consid- cred as amazing technological NEWS photo Mike Vakefleid IT’S not the largest group of Youth View writers we've ever had at the North Shore News, but so far these four North Vancouver high school students have made up for their smail class size through prolific writing. However, if these hi-tech androids continue to learn on their own, they might realize that they don’t have to be slaves — that they can exist on their own, with the ability of re- creating, themselves. So it is possible that they might one day tum against people, eliminate us all, and create an androidic civilization of their own. All of this could just be that Add a second . L watch way too much TV. But then again, a little while back somcone dreamed of walking on the moon, which I'm sure, at the time, * sounded just as crazy as androids taking over the world. T’'m just posing the question of whether or not we know what we're getting ourselves into. Just another thought froma crazy, punk teenager whose mind has probably been warped and. fried by modern society.
