Burt this year he has sold 179 of them. Thar’s four more than Murray Henry on the fundraising committee of the Fiwanis of Capilano knows about. But Wickwire has been buying up unsold cakes from other Kiwanis cake-sellers in his bid to reach a self-imposed goal “T wanted to reach 200 but Toran out of cakes,” Wik laughs ruefully. “T personally was trying to contribute a cheque tor $1,000.” It’s all part of the Kiwanis seasonal fundraising drive for local charities. The Capilano Kiwanis, who dike Wickwire are all seniors, are hoping to raise more then $2,500 this year through their cake sale, Westons Bakery in Ontario work with the Kiwanis across the country every year at this time filling orders for their 1.25 kg ring cake, Henry describes it asa “very good, very popular, medium to dark christmas cake” which the Kiwanis continue to sell for $15 “even though Westons raised the price on us this year to $10.50.” The lacal organizations have to predict their sales volume with some accuracy because Westons ships to order across the country and cuts off sales in November. Wickwire is Henry's top seller this year, just as he was last year and the year before that. “We recognize him as being our best salesman and honor him for it,” says Henry. But Wickwire wants to retire from cake sales next year. “It is fin,” he emphasizes, “but when you get to my age it can get tiring.” Wickwire will be 90 next year. “I'm just a fellow who is fading away. | appreciate the pub- licity but the Kiwanis are doing the fundraising and donating to the charities. They are the ones who should get all the credit.” Club president Roland Hunter says the cake-sale money goes into the Kiwanis pot for distribution in the middle of the year. Last year the Capilano Kiwanis raised $31,922 for a variety of worthy causes inchiding: WB Harvest House Foodbank: B West Vancouver Youth Project; @ North Shore Home Support; @ the Kiwanis Foundation’s [OD Project. Hunter says not many people are aware of the IDD Project, which he deset‘bes as’ doing. wonderful work in con:bating iodine deficiency disorder around the world through the diser- bution of iodized salt.” ; Hunter, like Henry, tips his hat to Wickwire’s efforts over the last six or seven years, “We are thinking of calling him Cakes Wickwire,” laughs Hunter.
