From page 3 pleased with the event and the turnout. “There were certainly lots of questions to be asked and over the course of the day, hopefully, there were a few hundred who got touched by the. candidates.” With 15 of the 16 council candidates present (Joe Terry, like mayoralty candidate Dave Janis, has remained invisible), McLaughlin was unable to let all candidates answer all ques- tions. But everyone got a crack at their vision for Lower Lonsdale and the Versatile Lands as well as the contro- versial decision to allow a mar- tial arts centre to be built on the bank of Mosquito Creek. Experienced incumbent councillors Stella Jo Dean, Barbara Perrault and Barbara Sharp managed several salvos. Dean. was the only council member present (Bill Bell was the other} to have opposed the martial arts studio at 238 Fell Ave. Said Dean, “One of the reasons was the land was zoned for park and public use and we have a policy that we do not build commercial on park land.” But Perrault defended her support of the development on the grounds that the build- ing’s small footprint would not impact the ngarian edge of Mosquito Creek “The development, the proposal was very artistic. It is -going to improve, it is going to enhance the area. It is not going to stop the fish,” said Perrault. Coun. Darryl Mussatto said the issue was a grey area and if he was wrong he would -be the first to admit it. “If we are worried about impacting the creck, we should be looking at our * park- ing lot for the North Van Rec Centre because of all the check them out at Capilano Volkswagen 1151 Marine Drive North Vancouver Tel: 985-0694 BEFORE YOU SHOP BROWSE THE NEWS © North Vancouver City drainage, the water that lands on that parking lot when it rains drains right — into Mosquito Creek,” said Mussatto. Diarmuid O°’Dea, who impressed with his positive optimism, said that although he opposed the Mosquito Creek development he felt the city had done a pretty good job of protecting its existing creeks. Other challengers who opposed the building of the martial arts studio were Philip Marsh, Gordon Moore, Csaba Frank Tusko and Tangee Gunderson. Bill Johnson clearly sup- ported the need to protect fish habitat but failed to state his position on Mosquito Creek. The fireworks of the after- noon were triggered by a questioner who asked Sharp and Coun. John Braithwaite to admit support from, and party affiliation with, the NDP. Braithwaite exchanged angry words with McLaughlin when the chairman cut off his shouted questions: “Where are you getting that informa- CAPILANO VILLAGE Dr. Andreas Weimar and Dr. Grace U.
