@ Hire Photographs by Hiro, edited by Richard Avedon, Bulfinch Press, 140 pages, $88.00. In 1954 Hiro arrived in New York. He had grown up in China and Japan, but now chose to call America home. He enrolled in the School for Modern Photography but soon left, eventually finding work in Richard Avedon’s stu- dio. It was Avedon who intro- duced the young photograph- er to famed art director Aiexcy Brodovitch. Over the next few cars the two men were to ave a great influence on Hiro. Brodovitch told him, “If you look in your camera and see something you've seen before, don’t click the shut- ter.” This was advice Hizo took to heart and went on to create images the like of which no onc had seen before. His technical precision enabled him,to make multi-layered photographs, which allowed us to see what Hiro saw in his mind; : : Offered in this bock is a collection of pho- tographs stamped with Hiro’s distinctive style. Fashion, advertising products, portraits, they all seem: different from anyone else’s work. His photographs have been on the leading edge of creativity for decades. Once Upon A Remedy gathers natural reme- - dies to assist in preventative heaith care. The authors (mother and daughter) make no special claims, just that readers should give their sug- gestions a try. Medicine That Kills takes a more serious approach te iNness as Kolp relates her mother’s battle with diabetes. The book doesn’t have much good to say about the medical establishment as “wrong diagnoses, wrong medications and perverse side effects” followed the onset of ill- ness. .
