of quake

IN THE wake of the most
recent Los Angeles earth-
quake, BC Tel offers some
suggestions on how best to use
your telephone in an ecarth-
quake or similar emergency.

During an emergency. the Iele-
phone company urges peapte to:
s make sure all telephone receivers
are hung up.
suse the telephone only in tife-
threatening situations:
° if you must make a call, dial-tone
delays may occur, If so, da not hit
the switch hook repeatedly or hang
up und redial repeatedly. [tis much
faster to pick up the phone and wait
for dial tone: :
* coin telephones are one of the
services given priority iti a disaster,
so if vou cannot get a dial tone on
your home or work phone. go Ic
your nearest coin telephone to
place your call.
Since local lines may be congested
in an emergency. BC Tel suggests
the following:
« establish an out-of-province con-
tact who could be catled by con-
cerned family and friends. The
contact could act as a message
clearing centre reducing the vol-
ume of calls in the disaster area.
* look in the front pages of your
telephone directory. go lo your
local library or contact your focal
municipal office of the Provincial
Emergency Program for more
information on disaster planning.
