MAILBOX. Check before placing blame Dear Editor: It takes broad shoulders to be government. Coming in threes, as things frequently do, I came across three cases recently where someone said ‘it’s the govern- ment’s fault’ only to correct themselves after my office in- vestigated. First, a city tax official refused to credit someone with her home- owner’s grant because of a small technical error. When the taxpayer complained she was told by the ci- ty official that it was the provin- cial government's fault. When my office investigated she received her grant and the city official denied having blamed the province. Second, a non-profit society decided not to allow pets in its housing project and told disap- pointed new tenants that this was the provincial government's fault. When my office investigated we were told that B.C. Housing Commission does allow pets but when societies run projects they van set their own policy. Third, a physician called a pa- tient in for an exam and then told her he couldn’t provide a pap smear and mammogram because of the provincial government. Investigation showed that pap smears and mammograms are paid for when prescribed by a physi- cian for screening purposes. If, in the physician's medical judgment, the tests are not warranted, then the patient should be educated and the tests not provided. Unfortunately, when a physi- cian makes the correct decision but then adds a political opinion, the patient is teft uncertain as to whether the decision is medical or political. Once again we had a case of someone trying to blame the pro- vincial government rather than accepting personal responsibility. We all know that governments make plenty of mistakes. The events of this week, however, show that it occasionally pays to check to sec how many times the blame is merely a poor excuse. David D. Schreck, MLA North Vancouver-Lonsdale ‘Alderman’ more than merely a label Dear Editor: I was saddened that the NDP abolished our traditional term of “alderman,” embodying as it does some !,500 years of our history. The term derives from our Sax- on forefathers — the populous Angles who ruled England prior fo the 1066 Norman Conquest. Ancient Britain then became CUSTON VERTICAL BLINDS Save 55% off custom known as ‘tAnglieland.’’” An ap- preciable area of England is pres- ently known as ‘‘East Anglia.”’ According to library archives the ancient spelling of ‘‘Alder- man’”’ was *‘Eaidorman."’ Those wisemen promulgated the laws and customs governing the lives of our ancient forebears. Much of this wise body of law was incorporated, according to historical account, in Norman law and subsists today in various changed forms. The term ‘‘Alderman,"’ repre- senting linkage with our ancient Saxon past, is more than a mere label or call name. ft represents a historic, living legacy.
