He first hit big in 1980 with The
Cat Came Back. That collection of
’_ light-hearted songs has become
" standard fare in countiess daycares

and homes and kindergartens °
coast to coast.

Fred Penner is in the house with
more warm, whimsical buoyancy.
He’s moved well beyond the basic
guitar formula to embrace circa
1930s-’40s swing rhythm.

Rodriguez sings ‘‘canciones
urgentes.”’ The songs are testa-
ment to and in defence of the
revolution in Cuba.

The selection spans a recorded
Period from the late 1960s to the
1980s. Rodriguez is a major star in
Latin America and is a leading
force in a musical style called
Nueva Trova (new song).

Rodriguez draws on Cuban roots
music, salsa-rumba, cha-cha, and
makes of it something utterly
sophisicated by way of progressive
song structure, complex in-

strumental arrangements and an
impassioned singing style.

The music is intensely
rhythmical, and language barrier
aside, the songs are colored by a
sense of optimism. He says he
sings for pleasure and out of con-
sciousness. The combination
makes for some uplifting musical
moments. .

Here’s another band from
Scotland that’s got it right. But
where a group like the Soup
Dragons chooses te sup from the
Manchester Sound cauldron, this
wee bit of pop is round-edged me-
lodic rock. Fuzzy guitar static and
layered vocal harmonies define
the sound of a band that would
have felt at home in the 1970s.

The release wimps out in spots,
— the Joan Jett tribute Metal Baby
comes to mind as an exercise in
ironic’cleverness straying too close
to the source.

Among the better cuts, The
Concept cudgels puffy concept
album conceit and the love-man-
tra affair of What You Do To Me
shows the talent.
