Visa, Mastercard, American Express accepted. Open daily for tunch and dinner. Wheelchair accessible. 925-9545. HILE Cafchy’s might not have the aristocratic ring of its predecessor, Sir Francis Caulteild, the new West Vancouver restaurant delivers the aristo- cratic goods. Whereas Sir Francis stumbled across the local restaurant stage like an upper-class dipsomaniac, unable to follow through on a promising beginning, Catchy’s has been building steadily on a low- key opening that began in early January. Restaurant owners Lary Waldman and Denis Hayes have warmed the somewhat Clinical Sir Francis interior with rich green sponge-painted walls and deep red polished-cotton table dividers. The main dining area is roman- tically lit with candles and dreszec? in formal white cotton napkins and table cioths. Waiters are attired in white jackets and attend with pro- fessional efficiency. But, as the restaurant’s name might suggest, there is little pretension to the formality. Catchy’s has an adjoining fresh oyster bar featuring cocktails, a large discreetly-hung television set and high-back bar stools. It is an ideal location to instil a neighborly informality, and perhaps a welcome retreat for area residents from the rigors of stock- brokering, lawyering, accounting and whatever else might have bankrolled their rise to upper Caulfeild elevations. But enough cheap speculation; dinner, my good man. Catchy’s (the name is taken from one of the owner's nicknames) menu tends towards the conser- vative end of modern West Coast cuisine. There is strong seafood repre- sentation: Smoked Salmon ($7.95), Steamed Mussels ($6.95), Oysters {in the half shell, in a three-pepper salsa, $7.50) and entrees featuring salmon, prawns and that old white fish standby, Red Snapper. Five pasta selections ($10 to $13) provide a lighter and more reasonably priced end to the regu- lar entree list, which ranges from 983-3734 STREET “The best quality at the best plice Robert Bateman : SS “&. et, ENDANGERED SPACES — Grizzly — Issue price $485 Order deadline Earth Day April 22, 1991 “Over 1,500 frame samples” WALL STREET PICTURE FRAMING Westview Shopping Centre Phone orders accepted dinner ment Bate Sok} Timothy Renshaw TASLE HOPPING $13 up to $22. Rack of Lamb at Catchy’s goes for $17.95 anc! is prepared with herbs, mustard and a special balsamic demi-glace. The restaurant's wine list cur- rently features bottles primarily from the Pacific Northwest, California and Australia. There are some interesting choices from lesser-known wine producing regions such as Oregon. The wine prices range from around $73 at the bottom end, but most of the bottles are in the $20 to $40 range, which some people will find expensive. Catchy’s also features several wines by the glass, and the restau- rant’s management plans to dau-" ble its wine selection. Table Hopping sampled a Pen- droncelli Pinot Noir (1986) from California's Sonoma County area. At $21.90 it was a good choice, boasting big Californian pinot noir flavors. } accompanied opening glasses of Pendroncelli with a Carpaccio ($5.95). The appetizer of thin sliced marinated beef tenderloin came topped with Asiago cheese, a flourish of Dijon mustard and a light sprinkling of olive oil. Thin slices of carrot, red cabbage, cu- cumber and orange pepper deco- rated the dish. Across the table, a Baby Boc- UEMEPYE TEMOH AOO Sale $349 PALERMOS PIZZA-STEAK & LOBSTER HOUSE concini Salad ($5.95) provided el- egant presentation of fresh baby Mozzarella cheese, tomatoes and sliced red onions dressed in fresh basil and virgin olive oil. Both were suitably appetizing and artistically presented. A Fraser Valley Pheasant ($23.95) followed. It was excellent. The entree came with a fine array of unusual vegetables — a sure sign of an ambitious kitchen: baby butter-nut squash, baby green beans, baby carrots and a central island of sweet and sour red cab- bage. Duchess potatoes (pureed, then baked) came with roasted al- monds. The pheasant meat was served in a subtle sauce of mushrooms, artichokes and sundried tomatoes — a marvellous combination with See Catchy’s page 29 NOW OPEN 7AM FOR BREAKFAST woven. * Bacon & Eggs * French Teast pius 2 sausages « Homemade Muffins « Homemade Old-fashioned Cinnamon Buns LUNCH FROM 4.50 DINNER FRO 5.95 FREE HOME DELIVERY HOURS: MonsThurs. 7am-“Mipm; Fri. 7am-12:30pm; Sat. 5pm12:30pm, Sun. 10am-2:30pm, 59m10:30om 1786 MARINE DR., WAN 926-7891 Gy PER NIGHT J APRILONLY Boost up Get away from the office, and all the pressures of life. ~ ‘wt | Unwind with us in all the peace and luxury of our your spirits famous ocean front resort.
