Cie we te Not all are GST equal IT MUST make you feel good to know that when you pzy GST on your kham- burger in a Park Royal South restaurant, the pampered Red Brother sit- ting next to you is having a good laugh at your expense — literally, he not having to pay the tax. It's the same with almost everything else in the mall. You pay, the Red Brothers don’t, the place being on Indian land. The only exception — so far — is li- quor. I asked the staff at the li- quor store whether the Indians have to pay GST on booze. They do, but it’s ‘tin dispute’? — you bet — and a ruling is expected soon. All of which is just another ex- ample of how the feds favor the Indians, who allegedly belong to the nation’s downtrodden. Al- ready, they are costing us $4 billion a year and contribute prac- tically nothing to the federal treasury. Something might be said for this latest example of federal fain- theartedness if the Squamish band were actually living on the site, since Indians on reservations don’t pay taxes — thanks to the ridicu- lous Indian Act. But that, ob- viously, is not the case. They have rented the land out. Could aryone else expect to have such a tax privilege? If you know of anyone, speak, for a fot of other people would like to get into the act. It wouldn’t surprise me if Fi- nance Minister Michael Wilson, the GST guru, didn’t exempt the Indians from GST on booze, too. A spy has sent me a copy of the letter Wilson wrote to George Erasmus, national chief of the so-called Assembly of First Na- tions. In that letter, dated Nov. 23 of last year, Wilson goes on bended knee. He telis Erasmus that as far as Indians are concerned, Ottawa has adopted ‘‘a fairly broad approach ... in this new area of sales taxa- tion. “On reserve purchases of goods * by Indian individuals and Indian bands will not be subject to GST,” he continues. And “this treatment will be extended to off- reserve purchases of goods which are delivered to the reserve by the vendor or his agent.” If that means what it says, In- Gians can buy a suit or anything else, have it delivered, and pay no 2, Doug Collins ON THE OTHER HAND GST on it. The same goes for off-reserve purchases of services purchased for band management and real property. And if they hire a lawyer or an accountant to do work related to residential proper- ty, they pay no GST on that, ei- ther. Erasmus
