Omar’s salary was $25.00 per month plus 5% cominission. He and Bernice paid $5 per month rent for their living quarters above the store. He recalls: “A quart of milk was 10 cents, egys 12 cents per dozen, and 25 cents would buy a pound of any type of meat or poultry.” Omar recalls one bitterly cold New Year's Eve at Pathlow with a temperature of -40°F (that felt like -80°F with the wind chill factard, and with four feer of snaw, when he received a call trom his brother Ted to pick him up at Melfort, some 18 miles away. How in hell, thought Omar, was he ever going to accomplish that. How indeed. , Omar persuaded the CPR section foreman to rake him to Alelfort (return trip) via the railroad’s motorized handear which travelled at 15 miles per hour with no shelter trom the wind. At times, the two men had to lift the heavy contraption off, and then back on, the tracks to let a train go by. Omar finally picked up ‘Ted and arrived back home +— nearly frozen and disap- pointed at missing the cli- max of the New Year's Eve party.
