firinlenag Skiers sued for rescue costs CYPRESS BOWL Recreations Ltd. (CBRL) has filed suit in B.C. Supreme Court seeking compensation from three skiers for rescue costs incurred by the company im connection with a Dec. 28, 1988 incident in which five skiers were lost in the Cypress Bow! ski area. More than SO people were involved in the search for Casey Clelland, 17, of Kelowna, Steven Knox, 17, of North Vancouver, Craig Fourier. 16, of West Vancouver, Brendan LeBlanc, 17, of Sardis and Brad MacDonald, 17, of Revelstoke. The five got lost after ignoring warning signs and skiing out of bounds in the Mount Strachan area of Cypress Bowl. CBRL originally billed the five skiers $264.60 each for a portion of the rescue costs. LeBlanc and MacDonald each paid; the other three didn't. CBRL is therefore suing Clelland, Knox and Fourier for the estimated full $2,653 balance of the rescue costs. Company spokesman Mary Lou Troman said the suit was laun- ched in part because “‘it would not be fair io the two who paid in good faith if we just let it go,”’ and to establish some responsibility on the part of the skiers for their actions. The suit, filed May 2 in B.C. Supreme Court, maintains there was an implied contract that the skiers would stay within the bounds of the ski area and obey warning signs when they bought their lift tickets.
