NV man gets life for murder A DRIFTER who formerly lived in North Vancouver was sentenc- ed Monday in B.C. Supreme Court to life imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to second degree murder in connection with the January death of a 39-year-old prostitute. Lyle Wayne Ridgewell, 32, was picked up in Ontario on a Canada-wide warrant and returned to B.C. in February after the body of Julie Mare Smith was discovered Jan. 30 in her North Vancouver apartment. She had been beaten, stabbed and strangled. Ridgewell will serve a minimum 10 years in jail before being eligible for parole. Crown appeals youth’s sentence NORTH VANCOUVER District Crown counsel will be appealing * the sentence imposed upon a young offender charged for the hit and run death of 2 26-year-oid North Vancouver woman in May. The victim, Andrea Joy Rogers, died May 25 after being struck from behind by a car while walking in the 1300-block of Doran Road. The driver of tne car, a 17-year-old North Vancouver youth, was sentenced Sept. 8 to one year’s probation with counseiling, was ordered to perform 100 hours of community work service, and was prohibited from driving for two years. The appeal is scheduled for 10 a.m. Bec. 16 in Vancouver county court, WV Police seek armed man WEST VANCOUVER Police are searching for a man who, while wearing a Santa Claus hat, abducted an 18-year-old woman, holding her at knife-point, and threw her into the Capilano River Sunday. Tke woman was driving near The Bay at Park Reyal South at approximately 12:30 p.m. when a man wielding a knife forced himself into her cer. He ordered her to drive on and told her to stop the car at the bank of the Capilano River. He then ordered her out of the car. He ferced her down the river bank, pushing her and swearing at her continually. He then grabbed her by the sweater at the river’s edge, pushed her into the river, and fled the scene. Police say the victim was shaken, but unhart. Police describe the assailant as a Caucasian male, approximately six feet tall, 145 ibs., with brown, collar-length hair and 2 neat moustache. The suspect was wearing a clean jeen jacket and a red and white Santa hat with a white pom-pom on top. Police ave asking any witnesses to contact the detachment st 922-4141. L. Bay portfolios reassigned THE INAUGURAL meeting of the Lions Bay Village Council following the commurity’s recent municipal election saw the reassignment of portfolios to the four councillors. In his Monday, Dec. 7 opening speech to council members, Mayor Gordon Prescott assigned new councillor Daye Howard the fire, police and ambulance portfolio; with returning councillors Rilla Buckley handling zoning, planning ard landscaping; Daie Klatt overseeing public works; and Brenda Broughton responsible for parks and recreation. Prescott also assigned each councillor an area of interest outside of village boundaries. Klatt and Howard will be council’s liaison on matters concerning the Squamish Highway; Buckley will address air quality; and Broughton will be responsibiz for marine pollution.
