Clerk reading greeting cards
makes customer embarrassed

DEAR MISS MANNERS —
More than once, when IT was
purchasing greeting cards,
the clerk opened the card
and read the verse before
ringing up the sale.

My cards are far from coarse or
crude. They are chosen with a lot
of care and personal sentiment. |
actually consider them as private
as 0 letter and am very uncomfort-
able to have somebody other than
the intended recipient reading
them.

Am I oversensitive about this? If
not, what Is a response that would
be least Hkely to offend or sound
petty? I’ve tried placing the cards
face down, to no avail.

GENTLE READER — Reading
the verse at the register seems
rather a silly practice, and Miss
Manners prefers to belicve that the
clerk is merely searching the card

ing is also silly. ft can even get ex-
pensive, when shy people resort to
buying items they don't want in
order to hide one they don't want
seen.

The fact is that printed cards are
not the same as letters or notes:
they are massed-produced and
displayed for sale. If the clerk is
taking the opportunity of the sale
to amuse himself by reading the
card, Miss Manners can at least
promise you that he is not connec-
ting this with the particular cir-
cumstances of your purchase. Only
if you are asked an impertinent
question about the card may you
take offence to the extent of say-
ing, ‘‘Please just ring up the pur-
chase."’
