Updated home retains classic charm

YOU MAY not be able to teach an
old dog new tricks, but you can
certainly give an old house a few
new touches.

One of Vancouver's best-known
homes recently underwent a top to
bottom renovation that maintained
its classic character but added
modern efficiency and fresh
elegance. The Buckerfield _resi-
dence on Southwest Marine Drive
was built in 1927 for Ernest and
Amie Buckerfield, a family well
known in the Canadian

agricultural industry.

Sixty years later, the new owner
allowed her home to be renovated
to raise funds for the Vancouver
Symphony Society.

This is the third year in which
the society has joined with the In-
terior Designers’ Institute of
British Columbia to recreate a
classic home. Each room was
turnea over to an individual de-
signer to be re-done, and 20,000
visitors over three weeks paid ad-
mission.to view the exciting results.

Preparations began last
September for Symphony Designer
Showhouse ’87. As a first step, the
8,200 square foot structure was
gutted to make way for insulation.

‘Heat was going right through
the attic,’’ says contractor Waiter
McKenzie.

Home insulation was the solu-
tion, installed in the ceiling of the
attic and in the walls — right down
to the basement. McKenzie
estimates that the fuel bill will be
reduced by about two-thirds as a
result.

Throughout the house, up-to-
date’. features complement the
home’s original craftsmanship.
White columns grace the entrance
to the, tdarge foyer and its winding
staircase ‘which is reminiscent of
Gone With ihe Wind.

_ The foyer’s new wail coverings
are. striking in texture and uniquely
applied. A faux finish is used here.

First an overall coloi, then two
more colors are applied. While the
paint is still wet, crumpled pieces
of cotton are used to wipe off the
paint, creating a mottied effect.

This: process is similar to one
first used in Europe to hide im-
perfections in the wall.
