16 - Friday, October 17, 1986 - North Shore News TIPS TO GUIDE Tree planting with THE FALL is an excellent time of the year to plant trees and shrubs. The nurseries usually have a good selection of plants which have been growing in the fields and are now being dug. As we experi- ence leaf drop and have a chance to evaluate our yards and gardens, we can identify places where we feel a tree or shrub will improve the appearance of our property. The number one thing to remember when choosing a tree or shrub is: They grow. A_ large number of tree problems are caus- ed by trees planted in inappropri- ate places, or, on the other hand, inappropriate trees planted in good places. Very often, people will choose a tree or shrub to fill a small gap in their landscaping, only to find that in a year or two, it is far too large for the space and is now a problem either by requiring too much space or by being in distress itself duc to having inadequate room to grow. Always try to plant with the maximum growth size of the tree in mind, remembering that tree size can be controlled to a large ex- teniby regular and proper pruning and malirteranteadeamember 100, that the purpose of Branches and leaves or needies (from the tree’s point of view) is to take in energy from the sun. 1f you plant a tree very close toa wall or fence, the branches on that side will die off and your tree will become lopsided. Often vine type shrubs are more appropriate for these areas. After you have selected an ap- propriate tree and a good planting location; you should dig a hole that is about 20 per cent larger all around than the root ball of the tree. Be sure to remove any large rocks or construction debris from the hole. If the soil is clay or hard, poke holes in the bottom and ISN'T SE * have to stay home nights and ali * get obscure phone calls asking the same questions over and over * make a special trip home for someone who doesn’t show up * advertise and no one calls, or advertise and everyone calls * can't decide cn the value of your articles, or how to describe them, for an ad * get expensive advertising bills, and still own it THE GARDENER sides just before planting, this will keep your planting hole from Tree Talk By Brian Fisher becoming a ‘‘pot’’ and confining the roots of your new plant. Cover the bottom of the hole with mixed peat moss and topsoil so that when the tree is set in the hole the top of the root ball is about one inch below ground level. If you have a tree that is in a plastic or metal pot, carefully remove the pot to avoid damaging the roots. if the roots are wrapped in plastic or kraft paper, this should care be removed carefully. If tree roots are wrapped in burlap or are in papier mache pots, you may plant without removing the covering. For papier mache pots, carefully poke holes all around the bottom and break off the top half of the pot. For burlap wrapped root balls, start to fill in the hole then untie the burlap and string from around the tree stem and fold back into the hole. Then fill the balance of the hole. The hole should be filled with a mix of good soi] and peat moss. Do not fertilize the tree at plan- ting. Fertilization can cause @ tree to ‘surge’ and then die back. For deciduous trees, prune the tree at the time of planting to remove any dead or excessive branches. Questions? Or for a free brochure, write Tree Talk, #2-121 Charles St., North Vancouver, B.C.
