Van waiting for right to cut trees TREES REMAIN a growing issue for West Van District despite waiting a year for pro- vincial government legislation to grant the municipality rights to cut its own trees. Last year West Van, in response to requests from British Property homeowners, decided to ask the provincial government for legislation to regulate tree heights in the municipality. Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys, in a letter dated Feburary 20, 1984, informed council) that a number of homeowners were interested . in controlling ‘‘tree height ... for the preservation of views...°” Humphreys at that time ex- plained to the homeowners, council did not have the authority to give permission to people wanting to cut or trim trees to maintain their views. It was decided by council members to ask the municipal affairs ministry in Victoria to amend the Municipal Act so that West Van (or any other municipali- ty) could have the power ‘‘to create view mantenance areas at the request’’ of homeowners, ~ Municipal Affairs Minister Bill Ritchie, after receiving West Van’s request, said he was ‘sympathetic to (coun- cil’s) concerns’? and would deal with the matter as soon as it was feasible. However, Ritchie’s most reent letter dated January 15, 1985, indicates that ‘‘the overall matter of tree cut- ting’? has still not been resolved. As it stands, West Van still cannot lop branches off trees interfering with views. But, Ritchie did offer some optimistic words in that he said the matter was still under consideration as a part of a broader packaye of proposed changes to the Municipal Act. He added that he hoped West Van would have the re- quested amendments, thus authority, by some time this year.
